Chewable tablets
From Pharmpedia
Chewable tablets are the tablets which are required to be broken and chewed in between the teeth before ingestion. These tablets are given to the children who have difficulty in swallowing and to the adults who dislike swallowing. A number of antacid tablets and multivitamin tablets are prepared as chewable tablets. Chewable tablets are to be chewed in the mouth and broken into smaller pieces prior to swallowing and are not intended to be swallowed intact. In this way the time required for disintegration is reduced and the rate of absorption of the medicament may increase.
For the preparation of chewable tablets mannitol is used as a base. These tablets should have very acceptable taste and flavour. They should disintegrate in a short time and produce cool sweet taste. Chewable tablets can be taken at any place even if water is not available.
Important considerations in the formulation of these types of tablets are the incorporation of the pleasant diluents such as Mannitol, Sorbitol, and Sucrose etc for the taste and the mouth feel. Disintegrants are usually not required for these tablets. Such types of tablets are commonly employed in the preparation of multivitamins, antacids and antibiotics specially for children and elderly patients. The most common chewable tablets in the market are chewable aspirin tablets for children.
