Compressed tablets

These are uncoated tablets made by compression of one or more active ingredients with or without excipients by employing any of three basic methods of tablet manufacturing. Tablets in this category are usually intended to provide rapid disintegration and drug release. These drugs are typically water insoluble and include therapeutic categories such as adsorbents and antacids. These tablets also contain diluents, binders, disintegrants, glidants and organoleptic agents.

The compressed tablets are usually prepared on large scale production methods whereas the molded tablets are prepared extemporaneously on a small scale. These two main types of tablets are further classified as follows:
