Neurotransmitters:
Neurons communicate with each other through the use of chemical messengers, these messengers are called neurotransmitters; another name for a neurotransmitter or for that matter, a drug that is able to bind with a receptor is a ligand. Neurotransmitters, like drugs, are differentiated by their molecular structure. The following neurotransmitters are relevant to our discussion:
Acetylcholine (ACh): Muscles, Cerebral cortex
- The Monoamines
- Catecholamines
- Dopamine (Da): Limbic System
- Norepinephrine (Ne)
- Epinephrine
- Indolamines
- Serotonin (5-HT)
- Catecholamines
- Amino acids
- Glutamic acid (Glutamate)
- GABA
- Glycine
- Peptides
- Endogenous Opioids
- Lipids
- Anandamide
- Soluble Gases
- Nitric Oxide (NO)
- Carbon Dioxide
