Active transport involves the active movement of a drug or ion across a membrane against its concentration gradient. This
requires energy, is saturable, and is affected by competitive inhibitors.
Examples:
- Intestinal absorption of 5-fluorouracil
- Entry of alpha-methyldopa into the brain
- Secretion of certain drugs into the bile
