Oil in water emulsion

Oil in water (o/w) emulsion : In this emulsion oil is the dispersed phase and water is the dispersion medium. These emulsions are used mainly for internal/oral use as bitter or disagreeable taste and odor of drugs can be masked by emulsification. Externally these emulsions are used for formulating non greasy creams, lotions and liniments.
1. Oil in water Emulsions (O/W): In this emulsion oil is the dispersed phase and water is the dispersion medium (Fig.2). The common example is milk. These emulsions are used mainly for internal/oral use as bitter or disagreeable taste and odor of drugs can be masked by emulsification. Moreover easy assimilation of oil in the body takes place as oil is present in a finely dispersed state. Externally these emulsions are used for formulating non greasy creams, lotions and liniments. Cosmetic products prepared using o/w emulsions can easily be removed from the surface of the skin Example: Castor oil emulsion, foundation creams, vanishing creams.
